• Combination of morphology and molecular phylogeny identify five new species of fungus on rice in Thailand (Bipolaris chiangraiensis, Ophiosphaerella oryzae, Paraphaeosphaeria oryzae, Pyrenochaetopsis oryzicola, and Setophoma oryzicola).
• Export of assimilated nitrogen in symbiosis is host dependent for N2 fixers in Frankia cluster-2 strains in Ceanothus. Export of assimilated ammonium utilizes 2-oxoglutarate from the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, allowing Frankia cluster-2 to survive without the glyoxylate shunt and succinate semialdehyde dehydrogenase.
• In fig wasps Idarnes, oligophagy evolved multiple times, and feeding habits may influence host specialization, as species in the kleptoparasitic clade are less host-specialized than those in the gall-inducing clades.
• Roots of winter wheat studies show Burkholderia-related endobacteria and Mollicutes-related endobacteria are common in Michigan wheat field systems.
